Anti Depressant Linked to nebraska Shooting Teen
A suspect who killed 8 people in an Omaha Nebraska mall was on antidepressants. this is not the first time antidepressants have been linked to a shooter. One of the Columbine shooters was reportedly taking prescription antidepressants.
Antidepressants are required to carry strong warnings about their possible link to suicidal behavior in children, teens, adolescents, and young adults ages 18-24.
The FDA reports that antidepressants may cause suicidal thinking and behavior. A recent analysis showed children on antidepressants were more likely to have suicidal thoughts or behavior compared to children taking a placebo( sugar pill).
Parents, caregivers and young adults considering using antidepressants should be aware of product warnings, signs of potential side effects, and alternative treatment options that are available. This will help make an informed decision.
Many health care clinics suggest exploring a variety of counseling techniques, including counseling, psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy, family counseling and getting children and teens involved in sports and school activities.
