Diet and mood

Did you know caffeinated drinks: coffee, tea, sodas, mimic anxiety.
What this means is that these drinks may erase the effects that healthy feel good foods have on people.

Did you know eating sugary foods can make you feel sad? The sugary product raises your blood sugar: then the pancreas releases insulin to lower blood sugar levels and may end up releasing to much insulin. The low blood sugar kicks in and cortisol and epinehphrine are released which will potentially TIRE you!!!! " I am exhausted"

Angry Men need Support System

A harvard study states ten million adult men in the United States are so angry they are sick.

The study states the men routinely show inappropriate aggression: damage to property, threatening people, or injure people.

Many men believe it is macho to be angry, however, one is more likely to die of a stroke or heart disease.

Research shows counseling that uses meditation and progressive relaxation as well as visualization are the best therapy for anger!!

Civilian Arsenals violence in the USA!!!!

It is interesting to note that the USA has 90 firearms per 100 people. This is well above other countries. Canada has a 31 per 100 ratio. France has a 32 per 100 ratio. The USA exported 533 million in fire arms. Italy was second for exports at 250 million dollars.

The US sells more guns and Americans own more than anywhere else in the world. The US also has the highest firearm death rate among industrialized nations.

Eat a moderate low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet.,
Keep track of progress through weigh-ins, food diaries,
Get lots of exercise- 60 to 90

Academic Performance..child and adolescents

A child spends a majority of his life in school. A change in your child's grades is a huge red flag.

A change in academic performance can be emotional or behavioral. It could be due to an unrecognized learning challenge. It could also be a sign that a child is using drugs.

Early intervention is vital. If a child is having emotional pain or a learning challenge it is extremely important to address it asap!

Teenager and child Therapy

Teens find it challenging to vocalize feelings. Children are overwhelmed by thoughts and feelings that consume them during development.

Therapy via play and art can give vital insight into a child and teen's inner thoughts and feelings( their world).

Family therapy is important when treating teenagers and adults. Learning to express feelings and thoughts in healthy ways is vital to improve communication in your family.

Helping the teenager and parents to understand the child's behavior is essential in creating a change in your child's behavior. The family environment is a vital foundation for a spring board for desired change to occur.

Teens dating and violence

It is important to teach our children what a healthy and unhealthy relationship looks like through modeling the healthy behavior and talking to your children. I have listed some facts below for parental awareness.

Twenty percent of high school girls have reported being physically and or sexually abused by a dating partner.

Forty percent of girls 14-17 report knowing someone their age who has been hit or beaten by a boyfriend.

Twenty percent of homicide victims are between 15-24 yrs of age.

It is hard to leave an abusive relationship. Victims need support, safety, and assistance in order to leave.

Paxil Poem

From_E. Davidson
Ode to paxil

The world used to be beautiful...

Then in one moment of panic...
One pink pill...
Then another...
Everything has gone dark...
I remain a shadow of my former self
An echo...
A phantom spectator

I used to write more...
Now, this is it...
In 3 years
Iv'e gone numb and blind...
Struggling...

I tried to let you go...
But the dreams began...
Haunted me...
I felt high and afraid...
Well, more like terror...
Not fear...
And so, one pink pill...
Then another...

I feel Iv'e doomed myself...
I suppose you helped...
Is this it?
Is this all there is to it?

I can't sleep...
I can't wake up...
When I do, it's always late...
Don't remember the alarm going off..
Don't remember yesterday...
Everything hazy...

One pink pill...
A few hours go by..
Then a few more...

Now I remember...
The numbness is spreading...
Another pink pill...

Time does not stop...
The days go by...

I Am...
but that is all.

Nothing Else.

Cigarettes, Tobbacco, and Film how they mold your child's mind

I read an interesting article in April 23, 2007 called Hollywood's Smoke Alarm by Jeffrey Kluger. Below are some interesting pieces I am sharing with you.

75 percent of all hollywood films show tobacco use!

In two recent studies published in Pediatrics and Lancet they found children as young as 10 exposed to the most screen smoking were 2.7 times as likely as others to pick up the habit.

Research around the world shows that exposure at a high level will influence behavior.

Limiting exposure to TV and films?

Big Pharma

I read an interesting article in adbusters by Will Hall called Big Headache for Big Pharma. Below are excerps for the article.

The article states Big Pharma has hid drug risks and has illegally marketed it's product.

An FDA scientist Dr. David Graham testified to congress that atypical like Zyprexa kill some 62,000 people a year.

A study in the archives of general psychiatry concluded atypical drugs we're no more effective than older, cheaper drugs, and five state government initiated investigations.

Sports Mental Training

Tips for repeating your peak performance in sports.

Your body is relaxed and you do not feel tight or have tension. You are mentally focused. You are in the moment( not thinking about the score, your last shot, you are empty without thought). You are enjoying the experience and not thonking about results.

If muscles are relaxed most likely your mind will follow.

Parenting: child, and teens for health and success.

I have written about a few tips for positive parenting. A parent should reinforce positive healthy behaviors( respect, honesty, politeness, teamwork etc). It is always important to create an expectation of how your child should behave and what they can expect if they do not follow the rules. Teach your child honesty and encourage child in his challenges. Believe in your child because if you do not he will most likely feel inadequate. Be consistent and think before you speak. Model healthy communication without yelling. Use consequences to help your child make healthy future decisions. Begin teaching responsibility when your child is young. Set limits and ground rules. Love your child regardless of behavior. Teach your child to do the right things. Teach your child to value their own unique and special personaliies. Focus on strengths and positive actions. Accept your child so he can come and talk to you about anything.

Violence, anger, pain, Va shootings what we can do?

It is clear that the shooter was in tremendous emotional pain for a very long time. The victimizer had stalked students, sent inappropriate emails, scared two professors at the University.

I wonder if our society would benefit from policies that mandate long term counseling as a requirement for attending school?

In an incident at ASU a former football player had a history of violent behaviors and inappropriate threats to women at the university. He was not required to have counseling. He killed his teammate one night at a bar in Scottsdale.

We can rehabilitate individuals who are in pain if as a society we make it a priority. Children in pain are a product of families in pain and society must step up and mandate counseling services at the grade school level to prevent innocent deaths and bloodshed.

Teens Eating Disorders

Many teens develop eating disorders in order to maintain control in their lives where they feel they do not have any sense of control.

In families where feelings are not expressed and problems are not talked about, the teen or child may end up feeling sad, alone, and uncertain and at times and find eating helps to comfort them and make their feelings disappear for the moment. Many use food as a way to stuff down all the negative feelings and throwing up usually gives them a sense of relief, as if they are getting rid of all the built emotions.

Some teens punish themselves for abuse they have received: physically, emotionally, and. Sexually. They develop an eating disorder to gain a sense of control in their lives.

Television, Film, Internet, and media portray being slim with being happy which is far from the truth. Many teens try to emulate these models.

There are many pressures on todays teen agers. It is vital for parents to teach their children about intrinsic qualities instead of focusing on external items to create happiness and health. Children and teens need to be able to express all of their emotions and know they are still loved and not criticized or judged. Teens need to be encouraged to be themselves and develop their own unique special gifts and qualities.
If your child has a strong sense of his/her positive traits internally he/she will be less likely to try and become like society's "what you should be or look like" and will learn to be happy and love themselves for who they are not their pant size.

Kids love Animals

Children can learn a great deal by interacting with pets. A pet can provide love and help relieve loneliness.

Taking care of an animal can teach a child empathy. A child's empathy can transfer to a greater sensitivity to humans.

Taking care of animal teaches a child the importance of responsibilty. A child can learn to feed his pet and give them water. This teaches children how important it is to be present for animals and not neglect them.

Anger: child, teen, adults

Anger has many faces in our society. Many repress their anger and withdraw. Some destroy property or vandalize the streets with graffitti.
Teens use drugs and alcohol to cope with anger.

Anger is a red flag that can help us address a child's inner world. Anger can be brought on by fear. Anger can be the sign that change needs to occur in our lives.

There can be many roots of anger; physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, neglect, deprivation, trauma, depression, grief, alcohol and drug abuse. The way I see it is the child or teen is in emotional pain. This pain must be addressed otherwise the child or teen will be out of balance and unhealthy behaviors can ensue.

Many parents can benefit by becoming aware of their own anger and its roots. If parents can communicate in healthy ways and model positive behaviors when dealing with anger they can pass this behavior on to their children.

Stress Child and Teen

There are a number of stressors for teens and children. Some stressors include: school work, negative self esteem, challenges with peers, dangerous neighborhoods, seperation or divorvce of parents, illness, changing schools, death, financial family issues.

Parents can help their children by: watching how their children's stress is impacting their child's moods and behaviors. Listen empathically to their child. Teach and model stress management activities and healthy behaviors. Encourage children to develop skills in sports and other healthy pro-social activities.

Teens can learn to cope with stress by exercising, eating vegetables and fruits (healthy diets), developing self concept, creating a support system that is a positive environmment for the teen, take yoga, learn visulization and relaxation techniques.

Grief: Teens, Children

Listening to a child or teen who has grief or has experienced a loss is the most important thing you can do for a child or teen. Listening to the point that you can really feel what the other person is feeling is vital.

Children and teens who have serious problems with grief and loss may show one or more signs of: extended period of depression, loss of appetite, inability to sleep, fear of being alone(prolonged), acting younger than they are for a long pd of time, stating they want to join the deceased, sharp drop in school performance, lack of focus, drug or alcohol use, risky behaviors, criminal behaviors, suicidal thoughts.

These signs may indicate professional help is needed.

Anxiety Teens, Child,

Children and teens with anxiety disorders experience excessive fear, worry, or discomfort that interferes with their daily lives.

Anxiety Diosrders that are commonly recognized include: Phobias, Generalized Anxiety Disorders, Panic Disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Cognitive behavioral therapy has been effective in treating anxiety disorders. Individuals learn to understand how their thinking patterns contribute to their symptoms and how to change their thoughts so that symptoms are less likely to occur.

PTSD teens, children, chilld

Over one million children suffer abuse each year as well as those who have experienced previous traumatic experiences are more likely to develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Here is a list of other risk factors for developing PTSD.
1. Type of trauma: physical, sexual, emotional?
2. Severity of the trauma
3. Duration of trauma
4. Individuals ability to cope w event
5. Support from: family, friends, others.

Not every traumatized person develops PTSD. Being emotionally detached after a trauma is not a healthy response. Emotional distancing stuffs the feelings inside and puts the individual at a greater risk of developing PTSD.

Loss loved one child , teen

It can be powerful to write a letter expressing one's feelings to a loved one who has passed. In place of sending the letter you can share it with someone you love and trust.

It can be healing to create a list and draw a picture that visually represents the wonderful memories you have shared with your loved one. One can create a collage with pictures celebrating their life.

You can keep all the wonderful memories alive by re-visiting these good memories and sharing them with friends.

Laughter is a social event. A child is more likely to laugh if people are around then alone.

Laughter is the way the brain expresses the pleasure of play.
Laughter is like learned breathing with a specific sound set.

Clinical evidence suggests laughing makes us healthier by supressing hormones that are stress induced and therefore elevating our immune system to fight disease.

Alcohol addiction child,teen,families.

Dependence on alcohol and drugs is a complex controversial disorder, but susceptability to the disorder shows a clear pattern of inheritance, which indicate that genes transmit some biological basis for greater vulnerability.

Regardless of whether drugs have a genetic or environmental component we must ask ourselves what can we do to prevent drug and alcohol use.

We must give our children a voice and truly listen to their feelings. A child needs to feel : safety, security, and stability. Children need to be able to express their thoughts and feelings without judgment, shame, or criticism.

A child who trusts his parent and feels safe will be able to talk about his/her pain and can learn healthy ways to cope with their pain(emotions).

If our children are not comfortable speaking to family members they will reach outside of the family and have a good chance of potentially using drugs to self medicate their perceived pain.

Mothers on Meth..child,teen, adults, families,

I was watching a show about babies that are born on meth...yes crystal meth.

As of today mothers can use crystal meth and give birth to babies on meth without being charged with a crime and without mandatory counseling, rehabilitation, or anything to help them.

As a society we must value people in pain. We must value the pain of the baby on crystal meth and the dysfunctional families. If we continue to look the other way it will continue to ooze out in horrible ways that will plague our nation.

Misdiagnosis children and adults

I read an interesting article regarding misdiagnosis of diseases and I am sharing a few interesting points I found in the article called How often are patients misdiagnosed by David Leonhardt.

Studies of autopsies have shown that doctors seriously misdiagnose fatal illnesses about 20 percent of the time. So millions of people are being treated for the wrong disease. As shocking as that is, the more astonishing fact may be that the rate has not really chjanged since the 1930's.

There is no bonus for curing someone and no penalty for failing, except if the mistakes rise to a situation where malpractice arises. So even though doctors can have the best intentions, they have little economic incentive to spend time double checking their instincts, and hospitals have little incentive to give them the tools to do so.

Self Esteem for Children

Self esteem is your child's attitude about themself. Does your child expect success in life?

Children with a low self esteem have very little self respect and do not feel confident about their choices and life decisions.

These children blame others for their challenges and do not take responsibility for errors.

It is very imortant for a parent to give his/her child support and encouragement so he/she can develop a healthy self concept for life.

Depression SSRI Medication

I read an interesting article in the LA Times by Marianne Szegedy-Maszak on 3-27-06. The article is titled: Antidepressants aren't the magic that millions hoped. For the first time, prescriptions fall.

Now research has found that a single medicine typically does not effectively treat depression for most people and that those with depression often stop taking the medicines altogether.

A study by Dr. Madhukar Trivedi a psychiatry professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas published in the January issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry, found that a single SSRI medication works only for about 30 percent of chronically depressed patients. For most of the 2,876 outpatients participating in the study, real progress came only with subsequent drugs or with a combination of drugs.

Probably their is nothing in human nature more resonant with charges, that the flow of energy between two biologically alike bodies, one of which has lain in amniotic bliss inside the other, one of which has labored to give birth to the other. Adrienne Rich 1939

Helping others elevates mood for teens and adults.

Affection and gratitude for altruistic acts has been associated with elevating our mood. Research supports the natural release of endorphins in our brain when we believe we have completed a kind and loving behavior.

Careers teens and adults...Do what you love!

You are as important as what you think about all day. More than what food we eat, we are what we think of ourselves.

Your expectations create what you will do in life. If you can convert the "would like to" and "I am trying to" to I WILL! You will create the environment where your talents and wishes are nurtured.

Those who expect to succeed will overcome any obstacles one will encounter and will have the strength and determination to obtain one's dream.

Prescription Drug Abuse

I read an interesting article on prescription drug abuse in the March 28, 2007 article in JAMA called prescription drug abuse rises globally.

The article states that drug abusers do not know that abuse of prescriprtion drugs can be more risky than the abuse of illicitly created drugs. These prescription drugs present a higher overdose risk than the abuse of illicit drugs due to the high potency of some of these synthetic narcotic drugs.

Bipolar Disorder Psychotherapy/ Counseling

I read an interesting article in Primary Psychiatry 3-2007 called A Review of Evidence-Based Psychotherapies for Bipolar Disorder by Ruth E Geller MD, and Joseph F Goldberg MD.

The abstract from this article follows. " Until recently, clinicians believed that pharmacotherapy alone was the mainstay of care for patients with bipolar disorder, and psychotherapeutic intervention held little or no benefit. However, over the past several decades, evidence has shown that several validated disease-specific forms of psychotherapy demonstrate unique value as adjuncts to pharmacotherapy management. Based on the stress-vulnerability model of mental illness, which highlights the interplay of biopsychosocial factors in disease risk and relapse, psychotherapies have been recognized as providing unique therapeutic benefits based on cognitive, interpersonal, and other psychosocial dimensions of illness. In addition, clinicians have realized that patients and people in their lives can learn techniques to more effectively manage bipolar disorder. Four psychotherapeutic modalities have been validated through randomized, controlled clinical trials and have shown efficacy in combination with pharmacologic treatment. Evidence based psychotherapies for bipolar disorder include cognitive behavioral therapy, family focused treatment, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy, and psychoeducation. This article reviews each of these modalities and identifies evidence behind each approach.

Mothers and Narcissistic Personality Disorders

The child who becomes a full blown Narcissist with NPD disorder in most cases had a mother who was a narcissist.

The mother is the most important relationship to a child. The mother usually provides the foundation of care that defines the baby's early world.

The narcissistic mother is cold and controlling. She invades her child's existence. The mom manipulates the child to conform to her desires.
The narcissistic mother rejects everything in her child that she finds objectionable and places the child in an anxious state of losing her affection if the child shows any dissatisfaction.

The narcissist mom responds to his/her child with anxiety, anger, or withdrawl. The narcissist is more needy than most people.

A narcissist tends to have superficial social relationships since few want to follow his agenda. A narcissists closest friends are other narcissists who maintain a comfortable distance while exchanging gestures of mutual admiration. Neither make any emotional demands on each other.

Children of a Narcissist

All children need love to survive. If a child does not receive affection, the child will perceive what attention the parent does offer as love. If all the child receives is criticism, then the verbal abuse is interpreted as love.

The narcissistic parent who so often suffered from shame for personal shortcomings in the eyes of critical parents looks at his own child with disgust. The narcissistic parent subjects his child to the criticism they are familiar with. The narcissist masters the trauma of his own early childhood experience by taking an active role and doing it to another (his child) as hepless as he once was.

I read a few tips on helping your child be drug free.

5. Do things 1 on 1 with your child. Take a walk, laugh, tell stories, play cards, board games. Listen to your child and be open to his inner feelings.
6.Encourage your child to get involved in positive activities.

Oppositional Defiance: child and teens

The APA defines Oppositional defiant
Disorder as a recurrent patterns of negativistic, defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior toward authority figures. A child with ODD may lose their tempers very easily. The child often argues with adults blatantly. Refusing to follow rules, they deliberately annoy and blame others for their own misbehavior. They have a short fuse and gain a reputation for being touchy, easily annoyed or angered. This anger can lead to revenge seeking against others.

If the behavior persists for at least 6 mos., disrupts the family and home or school environments and affects the child's social and academic life, parents should consider seeking the advise of a child behavior expert.

Anger and Heart Disease

Decades of research show how chronic anger and the development of heart disease are often connected.

In the overwhelming majority of studies, individuals who have coronary heart disease report significantly higher levels of anger than people who do not have heart disease.

Do you want anger to effect your health, relationships, and life?

Narcissist

The true narcissist is self absorbed and deep down is emotionally bankrupt. The narcissist is a fearful
unwired robotic being.

The narcissist lacks self esteem. The narcissist can not give and be loving. The narcissist is an empty carcas void of spirit and soul.

The solipsistic narcissist can not give emotionally because he/she is an empty and depleted resource. You can not get blood from a stone. You can not get love from a narcissist!!!!!

Bullies at school: child and teen

Peers at school are nasty and mean for many reasons. Here are a few reasons they are nasty:

1. The child did not receive nurturing.
2. The child wants to get his way.
3. The child was victimized: emotionally, physically, and sexually.
4. The child has a low self esteem and does not feel good about himself.

Evil Family in Pain

Being around negative, critical, people will suck your life source out of you.

Allowing yourself to be under constant stress of having to react to a negative, critical, abusive individual could lead to illness. You have to constantly deal with...deal with...cope with...their unhealthy behavior.

The nasty person is in a lot of pain and most likely their was a role model that helped facilitate these unhealthy behaviors during early childhood.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and benefits for teens and adults

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
April 7th, 2007

CBT Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an empirically supported treatment that focuses on patterns of thinking that are maladaptive and the beliefs that are the foundation for such thought process. For example, a person who is depressed may have the belief, " I am a loser", and a person with a fear may have the belief "I am not safe." The individual who holds these beliefs may firmly believe the accuracy of these thoughts. The therapist encourages the client to see these thoughts as hypotheses rather than cold facts that are set in stone. The client is encouraged to test these beliefs. The client is encouraged to monitor and to log thoughts that  pop into their minds in order to enable them to determine if these thouhts are irrational and to change the thoughts to healthier more realistic thoughts.

Studies of cognitive behavioral therapy have shown usefulness with: sleep disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, and substance abuse disorders.
