The National Institute of mental Health state 6 million men in the US experience depression. The aricle states that men may medicate their depression with alcohol more than women.

We fear if we fail in efforts to change we will feel much worse.

Protect children from accidents

Anticipate problems with your kid and teens in all settrings: home, street, school, friend's home etc.

Tell your child how to behave, but do not assume he/she will rember.

Know where your child is at all times.

Insist on appropriate safety equipment for all sport/ action oriented activities.

Get to know your children's friends and their family's history before allowing them to spend time at peers house.

Set up supervision when you are at work or unavailable with a solid good reliable source.

Howie Mandel shared his personal experience managing obsessive-compulsive disorder and his fear of germs. Mandel discussed his childhood growing up with mental health needs and how the stigma surrounding mental health affected his decision to seek help as a teenager. An estimated two-thirds of all young people with mental health problems are not getting the help they need.

Suicide in Custody

I read an interesting article in the British Journal of Psychiatry (2004 called Suicide in custody)

The case control-study was conducted to investigate the relevance of criminal history, psychiatric morbidity and social integration to suicide in prison.

The conclusion: A significant finding is the importance of suicidal behavior as an indicator of risk of suicide in correctional institutions, which until now has been a matter of debate. This study demonstrates the need for staff to take suicidal behavior as seriously in custodial settings as in any other circumstances.

Mental Disorders

I read an interesting article in the British Journal of Psychiatry called Socio-economic differentials in mental disorders and suicide attempts in Austrailia. (December 2004)

The aim was to examine social determinants of mental disorders and attempted suicide in Austrailia.

The conclusion suggest social causation of mental disorders and suicide attempts, which decreased after adjusting for mental disorders, but remained significant in the working-age employed.

I believe limiting TV is one of the best things a parent can provide their children.
