"Nationwide, more than 8,000 lakes, rivers, and bays are compromised by mercury's toxic effects"

"Mercury released from coal-burning power plants has remained steady, largely because there have been no federal limits on such emissions".

"The most common route of human exposure to mercury is through consuming fish. Microorganisms in lakes and streams convert mercury into methyl mercury than can accumulate at unhealthy levels is large fish.".

Children-Teens-Adults-Allergies

Today eleven million Americans suffer from allergies.

Experts state the immune system is designed to battle foreign invaders: viruses etc.

They state antibiotics and vaccines have eliminated some of our most toxic challenges.

The theory states that the immune system begins to battle: wheat, eggs, nuts etc.

The best advice is to avoid the foods creating the allergies.

Researchers are still working on the immune system. Looking at distinguishing good from bad is the big challenge.

PTSD-Truama-

There are more than 80,000 practitioners of EMDR(eye movement desensitization reprocessing) trained worldwide.

EMDR is used to treat: PTSD, trauma, anxiety, addictions.

A study published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology reported that 84 percent of patients suffering from a single trauma did not suffer from PTSD after three treatments.

The APA gave EMDR the highest level of treatment of trauma. Another organization has stated it is an empirically supported treatment for PTSD.

Animals feed antibiotics

"Rampant overuse of antibiotics, especially in agriculture, an industry in which 70 percent of all antibiotics are consumed, means we may no longer be confident that these miracle drugs will work to treat serious infections."

"In a disturbing bit of news for all of us, researchers at the University of Illinois have found bacteria resistant to antibiotics in the groundwater surrounding hog-confinement buildings. This makes it more likely than "superbugs"-created by the widespread feeding of life-saving drugs like tetracycline to farm animals, primarily to speed their growth but also to keep them healthy in the filthy conditions of industrial agriculture-could infect humans."

The above is a portion from an article in Ode 11-07 called Just say no to drugs in your food..antibiotics in animal feed pose a public health threat by Jay WallJasper.

Weight-Children-Teens

It is important to regulate behaviors that can contribute to weight gain for children.

It is important to empathize and truly allow your child to express his thoughts and feelings. A parent may disagree with the child's thoughts, however, it is important that your child-teen be heard. Your child is less likely to stuff him/her self with unneeded food if the child has an avenue to express him/her self.

Setting boundaries and limits is essential. Purchasing balanced, healthy foods and eating them at meals sets healthy examples for your child-teen.

Drinking at least 4-6 glasses of water daily is important for health and metabolism.

Eating three well balanced meals is important for healthy living.

Exercise is vital. Your child should exercise: run, bicycle, play sports, daily. A child should be limited as far as video games, tv, and computer games.

Children-Lead-Poisioning-Arizona

Children are still being exposed to lead and it is not just toys from china.

Homes with lead paint are the biggest culprit of lead exposure in children.

Sources state lead exposure can be coming from: pottery, soil, folk remedies, and many other unidentified sources.

Lead poisioning can stunt brain and nervous system development in children/teens.

Even low levels of lead in the blood can put children at risk for learning disabilities and behavioral problems. High levels in children can cause mental retardation or death, according to the national safety council.

The above info is from an article written by corrine purtrill in az republic 10-29-07 called state work to end lead posioning.

Love and Fear

"Love is what we were born with. Fear is what we have learned here. The spiritual journey is the relinquishment-or unlearning of fear and the acceptance of love back into our hearts. Love is the essential existential fact. It is our ultimate reality and our purpose on earth. To be consciously aware of it, to experience love in ourselves and others, is the meaning of life."

"Meaning does not lie in things. Meaning lies in us. When we attract value to things that are not love-the money, the car, the house, the prestige-we are loving things that can not love us back. We are searching for meaning in the meaninglesss. Money, of itself, mean nothing. Material things, of themselves, mean nothing. It is not that they are bad. It's that they are nothing."

The above is from the book AReturn to Love by Marianne Williamson.

Children-Teen Behaviors and Parenting.

Emapthy is important when communicating with your child. Setting limits and letting the child understand consequences for behavior is important.

Ignoring certain behaviors can extinguish the behavior at times. Many times your child enjoys the attention even if it is negative attention.

Positive reinforcement is important in encouraging positive behaviors.

Teach your child alternative behaviors when a child is "misbehaving"

When dealing with inappropriate behaviors always seperate the behavior from the child. Your child has unique qualities and gifts, however, the behavior( hitting is not ok)...the child is good! Parents need to be clear, firm, specific, and consistent. Screaming or aggression is not beneficial most of the time.

Children and teens that are treated with anger and agression tend to grow up angry and aggressive. Children learn that agression is the way to handle conflict or cope with emotions.

Anger Management

"We are conditioned to look for justice in life and when it does not appear, we tend to feel anger, anxiety, or frustration. Actually, it would be equally productive to search for the fountain of youth, or some such myth. Justice does not exist. It never has, and it never will. The world is simply not put together that way. Robins eat worms. That's not fair to the worms...You have only to look at nature to realize there is pt no pot justice in the world. Tornadoes, floods, tidal waves, droughts are all unfair."

"You may accept anger as apart of your life, but do you realize it serves pt no pot utilitarian purpose?...You do not have to possess it, and it serves pt no pot purpose that has anything to do with being ahappy, fulfilled person...The irony of anger is that it never works in changing others."

The above quotes are from Dr. Wayne Dyer, Your Erroneous Zones,

Depression Treatment

"Imagine on on treatment for depression that possesses the following properties: It is as effective as antidepressant medication but lacks their side effects. Its therapeutic results last longer than those of antidepressant medications after treatment has ended. It's benefits generalize to many domains of life. It causes changes in the brain in processes associated with depression. It usually needs to be administered only one time during the week. It generally costs the same or less than medications. Sound too good to be true? In fact, such a treatment has been around for decades, although many people do not know about it. It is called psychotherapy."

The above is from 10-07 article called The Best Medicine? How Drugs stack up against talk therapy for the treatment of depression by Hal Arkowitz and Scott O Lilienfeld. The article goes into more detail about antidepressants vs talk therapy.

www.lifeworksaz.com counseling Phoenix Arizona: child, teen, adults.

Counseling-Psychotherapy benefits

This is a small portion of an article in
Scientific American Mind 10-07 called The Best Medicine by Hal Arkowitz and Scott O Lilienfeld.

"Numerous studies have demonstrated that after treatment has ended, patients treated with medication alone relapse at twice the rate of those treated with CBT alone. Further, dropout rates for antidepressant treatments are two or three times as high as those for CBT(cognitive behavioral therapy), with one large study finding on on 72 percent drop out rate for anti-depressants by 90 days of use.

Recovered patients who had received antidepressants and continued on them for maintenence showed relapse rates roughly equivalent to those who had completed CBT with no further treatment.

These findings suggest that CBT therapy-counseling may address some of the underlying causal processes better than medication does or that it may provide patients with copins skills that let them deal better with life events."

Counseling-Therapy-Phoenix-Scottsdale-Tempe-Talk Therapy Results-Depression etc

" Recent studies have shown, for instance, that counseling can change brain chemistry in some patients just as effectively as drug therapy.

Talk therapy, for instance, creates marked, measurable reductions in activity in abrain area called the right caudate nucleus in obsessive-compulsive patients, and it returns serotonin levels as well as sleep patterns to normal in some people with depression.

A. 2004 study showed that effective psychotherapy in depressed patients causes metabolic changes primarily in the brain's "thinking" areas, such as the forebrain, whereas ssri's most strongly affect "nonthinking" subcortical areas."

"Glen Gabbard a psychoanalyst states drugs are not going to change someones desire to listen or demonize others."

Depressed Mood-Low Serotonin? Child Mental Health Disorders, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety

There are numerous disorders that are recognized by any imbalance in our brain's neurotransmitters.

Some of these disorders are: ADHD, autism, ODD, etc.

The biggest question we need to research is why our child's brain has any imbalance with their neurotransmitters?

Is the imbalance created by trauma and physical abuse? Is the brains imbalance on on byproduct of constant stress and anger? Is the low serotonin created from emotional abuse, neglect, and deprivation? Are the mood disorders are a by product of our inability to cope with stress in healthy ways?

Is the issue of a depressed mood or depression, ADHD, Oppositional Defiance correlated with Television, Media, Violence, Society?

Is the mood disorder due to the toxins and pesticides in our foods? Is the mood disorders due to the pollution we breath in on on on daily basis? Is it the additives in foods?
What about drug use, alcohol use, cigarettes..these chemicals passed on to our children?
Fifty years ago there was on on small percentage of disorders in mental health. What has changed?

We must be intelligent and use analytical and critical thinking if we want things to change in our society.
If we want healthy children and healthy lives we must take action.

Who we are?

We are all children who have unique gifts. As children we: are free to laugh, cry, play, dance, sing, scream, explore, play with bugs, get dirty, be creative and much more.

Many children grow up suddenly and become adults. The child begins to mask his true child-like spirit, laughter, and passion. Many children are taught to not show emotion. A child learns to stuff and hide his feelings and in reality ends up "masking a huge portion of who the child is". The true complete child is buried, however, the "true child" never disappears.

When we block our true feelings we seperate from connecting with others. If we block our true self then people never see who we really are. In order to be intimate we must be able to express our own unique feelings. If one breaks down the word Intimacy ( in to me you see) this can not be accomplished if we are always wearing a mask.

In order to be balanced physically, mentally, emotionally, we must be able to expess emotions and receive emotions.

Anger-Frustration

Life is not always fair. We have holocausts. We have wild fires raging through Southern California. We have fires in Arizona. We have crime and we all have pain.

It is important to become aware of our anger and affirm and acknowledge the anger in healthy appropriate ways.

If we can let go of our own perception that life will always be equitable, fair, just by society we can help ourselves forgive and look at things in on on different light so we can minimize our feelings of anger and focus on what we really want in our life.

Life is about change and acceptance. Seasons change their is birth and their is death.

At times it is our ego that is stubborn and refuses to change it's old habits regarding work, relationships, family, and friends.

This resistance can be the cause of great pain, sadness, and despair.(Anxiety, Depression, Grief)

We simply can change are thoughts to acceptance and forgiveness instead of resistance and this can open the doors of peace and tranquilty in our world.

Evidence Based Psychotherapies for Bipolar Disorder.

Below is an abstract from an article featured in primary psychiatry 2007;14(3)59-69 with the title above by Ruth E. Geller MD and Joseph Goldberg MD.

"Until recently, clinicians believed that pharmacotherapy alone was the mainstay of care for patients with bipolar disorder, and psychotherapeutic intervention held little or no benefit. However, over the past several decades, evidence has shown that several validated, disease specific forms of psychotherapy demonstrate unique value as adjuncts to pharmacotherapy manangement. Based on the stress vulnerability model of mental illness, which highlights the interplay of biopsychosocial factors in disease risk and relapse, psychotherapies have been recognized as providing unique therapeuticbenefits based on
Cognitive, interpersonal, and other psychosocial dimensions of illness. In addition, clinicians have realized that patients and people in their lives can learn techniques to manage bipolar disorder. This article describes evidence-based psychotherapeutic approaches for treatment of bipolar disorder. Four psychotherapeutic modalities have been validated through randomized, controlled clinical trials and have shown efficacy in combination with standard pharmacologic treatment. Evidence-based psychotherapies for bipolar disorder include cognitive-behavioral therapy, family focused treatment, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy, and psychoeducation.

Parents discipline must have balance for healthy children.

Authoritarian parenting (extremely strict), the parent trys to control a child's behavior and attitude by stressing obedience to authority. This type of parenting discourages disscussion. Punishment is the method offered most often instead of healthy communication.

The authoratative parent (moderate) sets limits and relies on natural and reasonable consequences for children so they can learn from making their own mistakes. Parents explain why rules are important and why they should be followed. Authoratative parents reason with their children and consider the children's point of view even though they may not agree with them. Authoratative parents are firm, with kindness, warmth and love. They set high standards and encourage their children to be independent.

The permissive parent exerts minimal control. Children are allowed to set their own rules and schedules and activities.

Research shows the moderate technique is the most effective for families and children.

Grief and Loss

Information below comes from an article called Good Grief by Greg Russell, summer 2002 University of Memphis Magazine.

Grief and loss "this is a subject that touches every single person at some point in their life." Neimeyer says " We all face it. Loss is not optional; it is part of the human condition. How we respond to it shapes who we are."

Neimeyer says "This research has led us to the idea that grieving is a process of rebuilding a world of meaning that has been challenged by the loss. I see grieving as a way of relearning the world in the wake of a loss."

Loss can be on a grandscale. Neimeyer states " when you stop to think about it, every person and every possession we love will one day be lost-this is not optional, it is part of life."

Neimeyer states "The goal of grieving is not to let go, but to find a way to hold on with less pain, and to have recourse to comforting memory."

Grief and Loss

Researchers are questioning the concept of "letting go" of a loved one who has passed away.

Many researchers believe that instead of gaining closure, the goal of grief counseling should be to foster a constructive continuing bond with the deceased person.

A connection can be accomplished by recreating good memories, love, laughter etc. One can imagine how the deceased would react to current life events.

Many researchers believe that finding meaning in loss or expressing positive emotions is a better predictor for long term outcome.

This came from an article by Robert Neimeyer APA Ad Hoc Committee on End-of-Life Issues vol 35 Nov 2004.
