Family Counseling for ADD and ADHD and Child Therapy

The family needs to adjust to the ADHD child, and know how to adjust to him. Parents need to know what to expect from their child and learn ways to help manage the child’s behaviors. Family counseling is important and should go hand in hand with child therapy or teen counseling. Teaching behavior modification and contracting with parents to reach desired goals is important as well and a part of family
sessions.

CBT counseling approaches can be very helpful in the treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD. Stop and think before you act counseling , look at your thoughts and make them healthier thoughts is a part of CBT. Teaching the ADHD child how to solve problems, and teaching him how to decrease his impulsiveness is a positive approach. Teaching the ADHD child ways to be more relaxed and less hyperactive as well as modifying behavior is vital.

Attention Deficit Disorder is an impulse-control challenge and ADHD children need to be taught how to control themselves, how to manage with their impulsiveness, how to solve problems, and how to stop and think before they act on their thoughts. They need
coping skills and life skills to help them on their journey in life.

Attention Deficit Disorder – ADHD individuals need to be taught how to be under control, how to wait their turn, how to display manners, show respect to teachers, peers, parents. How to focus and complete tasks at home and at school.

It is important to stay positive and use a strength based approach if you child or adolescent teen displays symptoms of ADD.

Explaining to you child or teen that he has exponential gifts and he or she has some areas to work on like everyone in life. We will all have areas we can improve upon.

It is not a good idea to label your child ADD or ADHD. Many children and teens will believe they are defective and will incorporate a victim mentality due to their “label”.

Using touch and simple directions is important if your child seems to have ADD or ADHD symptoms.

Counseling and psychotherapy are excellent ways to address ADD behaviors and teach children and teens skills for life.

Your child or teens school has just called you and they believe your child or teen has ADD or ADHD. The reality is many children and teens have a lot of energy and many children and teens could be diagnosed with add or adhd if we really want to label them.

There are many ways to approach ADD or ADHD: counseling, behavior modification, psychotherapy, diet, exercise. It may take a few weeks to implement a healthy program for you child or teen son or daughter.

Counseling and psychotherapy is effective for ADD and ADHD it will teach: mood regulation, anger management, boundaries, healthy social skills, behavioral programs, parenting skills, social skills, self esteem skills. Medication is popular however it does not teach these skills to your child.

Labeling your child or Teen add or adhd is a dis-service they will wear that label for the rest of their lives and it will not build their self esteem.

I believe if you make the investment in taking time to teach your child or teen healthy life skills it will create huge positive change in your child or teens life as well as your families forever.
