Meditation can reduce anxiety. Researchers have know this for years . The specific brain mechanism connected to reducing the anxiety has not been pin pointed . However studies show that certain areas or regions of the brain are activated or deactivated in relationship to relief from anxiety .

In one study anxiety was reduced by almost 40 percent . A study revealed that anxiety relief is associated with activation of the anterior cingulate cortex and ventromedial prefrontal cortex , areas of the brain that are involved in executive – level functioning.

During meditation their was more action in the v p c the area of the brain that controls worrying . Also noted in the study was that present findings reveal that the brain regions associated with meditation related anxiety relief are remarkably consistent with the concept of being mindful.

Research has shown meditation can be helpful with depression and anxiety disorders .

Anxiety disorders that impact over forty million Americans are the most common psychiatric mental health disorder in the USA. Exercise is a great tool for relief of stress and is also important to help manage anxiety as well as depression and other health disorders .

Researchers studying anxiety state that a 15 min brisk walk can help alleviate anxiety symptoms and exercise for a longer duration can be helpful as well .

Studies in science show that regular exercise works as well as medications for some to reduce anxiety symptoms and depression . A very vigorous exercise session can help alleviate anxiety and depressive symptoms in many people . Those that sit at home on a computer and watch a lot of tv without exercising have much higher rates of anxiety and depression . Many teens are addicted to technology and are not receiving the daily exercise needed . Setting limits on sedentary activities is important for your child or teens health .

Finding a health daily routine is helpful for reducing anxiety . Bedtime routines and daily routines will help reduce anxiety .

Look at ways to manage your stress and reduce stress in the home . Manage anger in the home .

Teens can decrease anxiety and stress by : eating regularly , avoiding excess caffeine , avoiding drugs and alcohol , learning healthy communication skills , relaxation exercises , decrease negative self talk, feel good about doing a good Job not looking for perfectionism , find positive supportive friends . By using these skills children and teenagers can build a confident foundation of skills to cope with life’s stress and anxiety .

Quitting caffeine is now listed as a mental health disorder . Many people that try to quit caffeine have excruciating headaches that can last 2-10 days .

Caffeine is now becoming an official mental health disorder in the American Psychiatric Association’s Statistical manual of mental health disorders . The two new diagnosis include : caffeine intoxication as well as caffeine withdrawal . These two conditions are considered mental health disorders when they interfere or impair a persons ability to function in daily life . Caffeine intoxication and withdrawal both happen quite often however it is rare that it becomes a significant impairment such that it is considered a mental health diagnosis that requires counseling or treatment . Critics believe we should not be labeling every activity that on turn will turn everyone into a patient that needs treatment either therapy , counseling , and or medication .

Advocates state that many children teens and adults go to their doctor for headaches thinking they have the flu and the reality is that it was from caffeine withdrawal .

Some experts suggest individuals that have : anxiety , high blood pressure , diabetes , insomnia , and those that feel jittery should avoid or scale back on caffeine intake .

Caffeine intoxication is defined as having five out of 12 symptoms: restlessness , flushed face , insomnia , nervousness , muscle twitching , irregular heart beating, rambling speech or flow of thoughts .

Caffeine withdrawal diagnosis as a mental health diagnosis states a client must have five symptoms within twenty four hours of stopping or a reduction in caffeine consumption . The symptoms for withdrawal : headache , fatigue , drowsiness , depressed mood , irritability , difficulty concentrating , muscle pain , flu like symptoms , and nausea .

Caffeine withdrawal typically begin within twelve hours after consumption at peaks at twenty four hours after consumption . Symptoms typically disappear in one week .

Counseling helps clients track their consumption and track the frequency as well as how many milligrams they are consuming . Counseling can then get the client to gradually reduce the amount they are consuming .

Limiting caffeine intake to 100 mg can help as well as drinking at irregular intervals .

Sleep and Depression-Anxiety Teens and Adolescents

It is very important that: children, teens, adolescents, kids receive adequate sleep.

There is a trong connection between depression and not receiving enough sleep. Teens should get a minimum of 9 hours of sleep. Children need at least 11 hrs of sleep.

It is important to discuss health and why sleep is essential with your child and adolescent.

Parents need to set limits with: cell phones, computers, and Tvs so children and teens can get enough sleep to do well in school and maintain a balanced mood.
