Another study came out today stating face-book can cause depression. The study states the more an individual uses face-book the greater there depressed mood becomes. The study makes a great deal of sense. Individuals for the most part post what is perceived as “fun”or going somewhere “travel”, activities they have been to, Food they have eaten, Hotels they have stayed at, and do not post negative aspects of their life. Facebook posts typically present all the good and not all the pain!!!!! If someone is feeling down and sees :”everyone is at party’s “and “everyone is having fun”by comparison it makes individuals feel less than when in reality the individual who is posting may be very unhappy . This recent study states social media decreases individual well being. Many people feel the fear of missing out when they see others shoving there fancy parties, new cars, fancy vacations in their face w daily posts.

A study in Sweden last year showed that Facebook usage had a significance on lowering self esteem. This study was a correlative study. In another study results showed that Facebook use was a breeding ground for narcissists.

Facebook users may feel there life is not as fun as others and life is unfair. Many people begin to feel jealous when their partner is receiving likes and wonder what is going on ? Feeling jealous that ones posts are not responded too as well is very common.

A recent research study published in the Journal of behavior therapy and Experimental psychiatry states that research suggests that sitting upright can make you feel more alert and enthusiastic, feel less fearful, and have a higher self esteem after a stressful task.

A study shows that posture of the shoulders , back, and head was connected to depressed client’s mood and that those that stood up straight had less of a negative mood, more energy, and were more self focused according to the research study on posture and depression.

There are many elements in life that can contribute to a depressed mood or that may trigger depression. A family history of mental health issues is just one factor or many. Individuals with a family history of substance abuse issues also has a connection with mood as well.

Stress and trauma from birth on can make many children and teenagers, and adults prone to mental health disorders including and not limited to: depression, anxiety, substance abuse and much more. Stress from family fighting and emotional pain can impact mental health disorders. Divorce, separations, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, divorce, changing schools, bullying, poor family relationships, grief and loss of family members, and more can impact mood and make teens and children more susceptible toward mental health disorders: eating disorders, Phobias, Mood disorders, substance dependence and more.

Neurological factors and low levels of neurotransmitters can affect emotional balance and stability. This makes mental health  disorders more common.

Sleep disorders and poor sleep have shown a huge connection with depression and mood disorders for adults, and teenagers. Simply not getting adequate sleep can have a huge impact on mental health.

Eating health and balanced diets are important for teens and adults for mood balance. Most teens and aduts skip breakfast and this impacts mood and concentration in a negative manner.

A few areas that can help regulate mood include research based cognitive behavioral therapy. CBT therapy looks at daily thoughts that are unhealthy or irrational and not based in facts and helps client’s first become aware of these unhealthy thoughts. Cognitive behavioral therapy further helps identify how ones feelings: anger, sadness, fear, frustration, etc are impacted by each unhealthy or irrational thought. As an individual changes his thought process so we see the client’s mood changing in a positive way. If we can change our thoughts and reduce sad feelings and angry feelings that we do not desire then we can also replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts that will produce positive feelings like : hopefulness, happiness etc.

There are a number of elements that contribute to a depressed mood. Working on areas that are out of balance will help manage depression and a depressed mood and can help adults and youth reach desired goals and create happiness.

Child and Teens on Media .

Many of us are numb to the facts that web sites we use daily: facebook, twitter, Instagram, snapchat provide us with media for free however it really is not free the price we pay is these companies sell our interests and consumer habits to these companies and that’s how they stay in business.

There are many applications that actually listen in to your surroundings and they specifically record what you are watching and what commercials are on and all of your viewing habits on TV.

Research shows that most people post positive events on social media and present a happy, fun, enjoyable life, however, the parts of their life that are miserable or in great pain or not highlighted. People look at the posts and think wow there “ life is great” etc. It is a skewed reality in fact they might be depressed and have other problems. Social media allows people to present a part of who they are almost like the cover of a book without looking at all the detailed chapters.

Children and teens well beings and mood can worsen from viewing social media and this has been researched. There is a correlation between lower self esteem and a greater sense of a depressed mood the more children and teens are using: twitter, instagram, snapchat , facebook, etc.

Many children and teens are addicted to video games and the internet. Many experts do not want to throw the term addiction around however there is research on I use facebook to forget my problesm, I use facebook more and more and really have no intention of being on so long etc. The same goes for video games .

Social media can be used by children to receive acceptance and validation that they perceive they are not receiving. Children and teens use social media for attention from others very often .

We know children and teens crave approval from there peers and there is this effort to seek( likes) or thumbs up or validation on there social media sites.

On snapchat many children have a game of not breaking the chain of using the site with friends and it has become a priority for youth to log in and comment daily even w a smiley face or hello just so they do not break the chain. Addiction? Can be yes.

Many children and teens have been cyberbullied through the internet. The internet and social media give children a sense of anonymity and they do not have to attack someone verbally face to face they can hide behind their smartphone or macbook etc. Cyberbullying is s huge problem in our society and it always leaves a digital footprint so children and teens must be very aware and careful of their behaviors because it is recorded for parents, and schools, and everyone.

Twenty percent of children and adolescents are affected by mental health problems and disorders. Those aged 18-24 have the highest prevalence of mental disorders of any age group.

It is important to try and use prevention and get your child or teenager help as soon as possible before dangerous behaviors become progressively more dangerous.

Depression in youth must be taken seriously it is the third most common cause of death among this age group.
